The house in The Royal Tenenbaums is a model of Wes Anderson’s films: obsessively packed with minutia, showing the internal worlds of his characters, all spilling out. Tenenbaums is grimly funny and – from Elliott Smith onwards – shattering. Rushmore? Rushmore is pretty much perfect in every way.
The Life Aquatic let details and affectations overwhelm actual emotion – though bonus marks for the final shout-out to Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension. Still, expectations skyrocket-high for Anderson’s newest, The Darjeeling Limited. We’ll be seeing it tomorrow – hopefully with a whole bunch of you, faithful readers.
Why so excited? Hotel Chevalier, the short film released as a teaser-cum-prequel to Darjeeling starring Jason Schwatzman, Natalie Portman, and a Paris hotel room. There’s something heartbreaking about an Anderson character refusing to leave a hotel room, as all that usual minutia is missing, packed away, put on hold. In 13 minutes, it’s up there with his best.
There’s barely time to try and win yourself passes to tomorrow night’s special preview screening of The Darjeeling Limited, courtesy of Vice and MySpace. There’ll be drinks afterwards at The Pond, and Jason Schwartzman will be in attendance, so act natural.
