When Patti Smith moved to NYC in 1967 she said she was going to "kick poetry's ass". Obviously it was not only poetry's butt that had the boot coming. But how Patti got from the pig swamps of Jersey to godmother of punk is a story we all need to hear.
Filmmaker Steven Sebring brings us a document, narrated by Smith, charting eleven years in her life - travels, concerts, spoken word performances, painting, photography, writing and thinking. It's a close-up view of a legendary artist, and it's beautiful enough to have won the Excellence in Cinematography Award at Sundance.
A friend of mine admits to following Patti Smith into her studio in Greenwich Village (yes, like a total stalker, but, you know, in a mentally-healthy, collegiate way). Anyway, when she walked in, Patti looked up at her and said, in a gravelly tone of voice, "Aaahm workin". Which is fair enough. So would you if my friend busted into your studio with a sparkling, mentally-healthy look in her eye.
Anyway, there's no need to rely on secondhand Patti stories anymore. Dream of Life brings us a virtual 1 hour, 49 minute studio visit with this notoriously private rock, poetry, visual arts, coffee-loving legend, on 16mm.
