This pseudo-doco-rom-com claims to be both a heartwarming examination of how love can conquer cynicism and a sharp comment on the contrivances of documentary filmmaking. It doesn't really succeed at either. Instead, it feels contrived, dull and supremely cynical.

Ostensibly, LA musician-comedian Charlyne Yi and director Nicholas Jasenovec are investigating why Yi doesn't believe in love, and when professional alt-nebbish Michael Cera takes a fancy to Yi the documentary begins to follow the pair's courtship. But wait - there's an actor (Jake Johnson) playing Jasenovec, and Yi and Cera were a couple before filming began. Are they and their famous friends (including Martin Starr, Seth Rogen, Jason Schwartzman and Demetri Martin) all just acting?

Who knows if Yi's awkwardness and flat affect are real or not, but the scenes between her and Cera make the bozos I overhear in cafés sound like Wilde and Molière. The film's best moments are its interviews with real Americans - from sassy kids to old married couples - although Paper Heart ruins even these cute anecdotes by acting them out with shitty DIY puppetry. Between this and 500 Days Of Summer, 2009 is clearly the year I become the Hipster Love Grinch.
