Yes, more old or rare films are coming out on DVD all the time and yes, you have a flatscreen TV and 5.1 sound and yes, we're all very impressed. What's missing, though, is the enforced focus of actual cinemagoing: sitting in the dark with all distractions tucked out of your mind, switched off and stowed under your seat.

Melbourne's Cinematheque is dedicated to providing the chance to see films on the big screen that would otherwise be kept small. Where else could you have seen the Coen Brothers' Miller's Crossing, Cassavetes' Opening Night, or seasons dedicated to David Lynch, Michael Mann, or the supercool Lee Marvin?

The 2008 season is so big it now covers both sides of their familiar poster. Just to whet your appetite: Roman Polanski, Fritz Lang, and Howard Hawks; Medium Cool, Witchfinder General, and Day For Night; and plenty of others that are more obscure but just as worthy.

Kicking it all off this Wednesday is 1958's Dracula, a Hammer horror whose influence is still infecting vampire movies today. Set aside some Wednesday nights this year to come and sit in the dark.
