OK all you savages, you lovers of commas, you students of fear. The man who made it acceptable to write about whatever the hell you want as long as you mean what you say, the pioneer of GONZO journalism, the one and only late, great, Hunter S. Thompson is the subject of a new documentary screening at ACMI.

Thompson's frenzied writing is an exhilarating ride that captures your imagination and inspires you to step a little closer to the edge. It's intoxicating stuff. You have to wonder though, how many of his crazy escapades - the fast cars, furious motorcycles, big-bore firearms, beautiful women and mind-warping drugs - are exaggerated for our enjoyment?

Not many, it seems. With access to hundreds of photographs and over 200 hours of audio and home-movie footage, director Alex Gibney was given access to Thompson's unpublished manuscripts on top of the many letters, books and articles he produced. These words come to life courtesy of narrator Johnny Depp, who once shadowed the writer's every move for his famous portrayal in the screen version of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Expertly edited into a fast and furious ode its subject, Gonzo owes something of its propulsive style to the journalist's own modus operandi.
