The Force is strong with Melbourne right now. Not only do we have an exhibition of Star Wars paraphernalia currently at Scienceworks, but also to ACMI, Kyle Newman's film has come. Hugely enjoyable it is, hmmph! Be first to rock up in costume this Friday for opening night and you could get free entry, plus your photo taken with Darth Vader or a Storm Trooper.
It's 1998 and Ohio twentysomething Eric (Sam Huntington) is resigned to following in the family car-sales business while his friends Linus (Christopher Marquette), Hutch (Dan Fogler) and Windows (Jay Baruchel) continue to hang out at the local comic-book store with nerdgirl Zoe (Kristen Bell). But when Eric discovers that Linus has terminal cancer, he convinces the gang to make a pilgrimage to George Lucas's Skywalker Ranch, where they'll break in and watch a rough cut of the upcoming Episode 1.
Star Wars fans will adore the affectionate in-jokes that are packed into this film. But it makes so many observations about nerds and fandom in general that even someone who's never seen Star Wars can appreciate how pop culture shapes people's lives and cements friendships.
