Ahhh, the Fitzroy Pool. Whether you come to socialise or exercise, summer in the inner north would not be the same without it. Originally opened in 1908 by a councillor on a row boat to provide locals with adequate bathing facilities, the Fitzroy Pool chalks up 100 years this Sunday.
While a hundred years on most locals are washing successfully at home, a dip in the pool has remained a timeless joy, proven to cure anxiety, stress, hangovers and, of course, pale skin. We're lucky because, in 1994, the unelected powers that be attempted to send bulldozers in. Thankfully the locals got passionate and kicked off the pool-saving "Save the Fitzroy Pool" campaign, ensuring that yuppies, immigrants and northside hipster supremacists can cool off forevermore without having to go to St Kilda.
To celebrate, the pool is throwing a party this Sunday, with free entry, free BBQ, vintage photos and pool memorabilia. There'll be a jazz band in the morning, then Matt Hurst DJs poolside from 2 'til 4pm. (Balaeric takes on yacht rock in a battle for smooth supremacy.) Summer starts here.
