Cutting your own hair at 12.40am after six or eight beers is a lonely, unnerving business. But wetting my hair in the bathroom mirror, I'm definitely sensing a rush. I'm about to save $40. Plus, I'm unemployed and my conversation bank is low: not a great time to go to the barber. This is totally a smart thing to do.
People say the way to do it is to hold the scissors vertical and chop into the hair. I start at the left temple and work back. It's slow going, like mowing the lawn with nail clippers. Reaching the ear, I start to gain confidence. Remember, the only criteria for success for any DIY project is getting away with it. Switching sides I'm interested to find the hair is growing in a different direction. I'm saving money and learning about my body. I adjust my grip and plough on.
Pruning the back paddock is a bit of a crap shoot but it's too late for nerves. I'm anxious for this to be over. I chop blindly and rapidly until it feels done. A quick check in the mirror tells me I'm pretty much symmetrical. Not bad for a first go: a little edgy, but that's the style today. Right?
