If you work in the lower half of the CBD and you don't have a library card you are fucking yourself over. Beyond books, City Library houses an extensive collection of video games, DVDs, and comics. City Library also has the nicest librarians around. Most of them try to remember your name, and don't take their jobs overly seriously. This makes it feel like a really quite, government-funded version of Cheers, with no booze.
City library comes with a built in following of derelicts and go-getters alike, lounging away another Melbourne scorcher in the spacious modern (air-condtioned) interior. The library has enough nooks and crannies to find some rare solitary peace downtown, or, if you're feeling social, saddle up to the kid playing Playstation 3 on the flatscreens, and get your ass kicked.
They have handy 15 minute net access by the entrance, and WI-FI access everywhere. If you're one of the lucky few who do not own a laptop, they offer a giant room of desktops computers for you to pretend to work at, while the clean-scrubbed scent of Asian med student, takes you away to another time and place.
