The urban plains of concrete don't need to be trimmed, prepped or fit for royalty. You do have to make your own mallet, but you save on stable fees. Bicycle Polo is the big thing in NY and Vancouver, especially Vancouver, and now it is here. Or, to be specific, it's in Rathdowne Street and behind the Northcote Social Club.
If this all sounds a little too much like a gravel-rash waiting to happen, don't be put off. You can always bank on one important thing: These guys love their bikes, and they're not going to ruin them in the name of violence.
In fact, the organisers are really friendly and into it. Here's what they said to us on email: "Melbourne's finest come out twice a week to brave gravel rash, bent spokes, and worse, for the love of the game. A more friendly and welcoming bunch of rogues you've never met. Beginners welcome - nay mandatory!"
So why not head down there? You're basically playing Bike Polo just by riding down Smith Street before 9am - this way at least you'll get the glory.
