I have no money. I also have a girlfriend bred on elaborate entertainments I can ill afford. She accused me of having exhausted my resources as a thrilling and worthwhile waste of her time. She claimed I had no more tricks up my sleeve. She was wrong. I had one.

I had responded to an ad on the internet seeking audience members for the localised version of 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire'.  It is called 'HotSeat', and it is hosted by Eddie McGuire (of 'Footy Show' fame) - an Aussie version of a pre-double-revenge-murder OJ Simpson. He's affable and well fed. His job is easy. I like him.

The ad promised: fun, a free sausage roll, and uncomfortable bench seating. HotSeat delivers on all three accounts. I had somehow pictured us as the only two audience members, but as we approached the Channel 9 studios, housed in a quiet laneway in Richmond, we were greeted by throngs of slack jawed, semi-retired, and visibly downtrodden suburbanites/HotSeat fanatics; milling around the alley, smoking, spitting in the street, and making last minute calls to Danoz Direct.

These are my people. I was home.
