The story that follows is a festering blight on my record, not to mention an indictment of humanity. It starts with me being in New York City, which is the good part. Walking in the door of MoMA, I am repelled by the population of Florida queueing for tickets. I leave and go over the road to the store, where I intend to purchase a ceramic cup so I can pretend I went to MoMA, while being ironic about the homeless population of New York in the comfort of my own kitchen. I accidentally nudge a lady with my bag as I reach for the mug. AND SHE ELBOWS ME IN THE RIBS. Turning around I realise this lady is an employee of the MoMA store.
The point of this story is manyfold. I suck; old New York divorcees are not to be messed with; and museum stores can be depressing.
Not so the Third Drawer Down Museum of Souvenirs. This new shop gives you everything that's good about art gallery stores without the guilt. Stock ranges from the classic Third Drawer Down teatowels and lapkins, to products developed specially for Tate Modern, their Art as Art, Decalart Mania and IDEA projects. There's also Karen Magazine, among other rare publications, and the decorative-yet-useful Banana Guard. And Abi's Crompton's elbows are the friendliest in Fitzroy.
