Let's not talk about fashion. Let's talk about style. And the differences between the two. Whereas style endures, fashion is fickle and seasonal. Style stands like a rock. Fashion blows like a reed. There are people with great style who don't have a red cent to their name, but there are lots of people in fashion who spend bundles of money looking dreadful.
For the past six months, Melbourne's men's retail has been too much on the fashion side. Thankfully James Cameron and his exceptionally talented brother Scottie are back from the wilderness with a new store that opens next week on the corner of Gertrude and Smith.
Inspired by the police station in Le Samourai, the new JC HQ is a dusky blue with a counter that actually resembles the police desk from the film. There is also a Jenga-like cardboard storage system which demonstrates, in true James Cameron style, how even the smallest and simplest things can be done well.
So, men: put away your three-quarter length camouflage shorts. Throw your bright Stevie T-Shirt to the dogs. In fact throw yourself to the dogs if you bought either of those items. And in their place make good with a stylish James Cameron spring/summer garment, some Common Projects shoes, Dita eyewear or even just a waterproof notebook. Death to fashion.
