Long since the demise of Fitzroy's original and most fondly remembered skate shop, the Snake Pit, there has been a certain hole in these parts, for those, young and old, who still get around on four wheels.
Along comes Hemley Skateboards with a focus on all incarnations of skating, old and new, from the freewheeling bananas and long boards of days gone by to the paddle pop sticks of today's ubiquitous skate market. The shop walls show off a quiver of decks from down the years.
Originally located in Clifton Hill, Hemley now holds down a far more central location in Brunswick Street and is poised to expand onto street level in coming weeks. With local character, quality homegrown and international stock, and competitive prices (Shop Decks $69.95, Pro Boards $119.95) as well as hardware, accessories, shoes and apparel, Hemley gives a nod to all things good and skate that have been missing from this strip for too long.
Hanging shoes out front doesn't always mean that a dealer is on. In Hemley's case, it's just that they're open for business, a browse and a yarn.
