In The Labyrinth, Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) ends up in a junkyard after eating a memory-destroying peach. Confused and disoriented, she stumbles through the anarchic assemblage, unearthing childhood treasures, loved by her but discarded by her parents. While the junkyard and the grizzled lady assisting her in her survey of these sentimental oddments turn out to be illusions created as a distraction by the Goblin King Jareth (David Bowie).
All this and more is available in reality. I refer to the Darebin tip shop; an indoor/outdoor treasure trove of dispossessed objects calling out to clutter again. On sale are items rescued from the edge of the landfill cliff-face, much like Superted was by Spot in the eponymous TV show. Fluffy toys, old Macintoshes, moustache sets, plants, serving trays, hundreds of sewing machines, record players in elaborate sideboards, mannequins - all can be found at the Darebin Resource Recovery centre. I picked up a CD-ROM of Encarta '95 for 50c and I'm still learning things!
A word of warning: I recommend putting Chernobyl-style time limits on your browsing of the outdoor section. The noxious hot air coming from the nearby sorting centre could be your last breath.
