Why is Zembla one of the best magazines in the world? Ekow Eshun touches on it during his interview with Dan Crowe in the new issue when he states, "there's virtually nothing in Britain [in magazines] that seems interested in doing more than simply reflecting consumer society. The great thing about magazines is that they can provoke and stimulate - they can change culture as much as reflect it."
Fired by its mantra 'Fun with words', Zembla is the least pretentious literary magazine to ever hit the newsstand. It seamlessly fuses short fiction, interviews and scribal shenanigans into a read that is blisteringly entertaining. Ironically, we are lost for words when trying to describe just why Zembla is so good. The best we can do is throw a bunch of proper nouns at you, which will give you an idea of the calibre of people who are, or have been, involved with this magazine:
Tilda Swinton (who was on their first ever front cover), JT Leroy, Manolo Blahnik, Luke Crisell (Editor of Nylon), Wes Anderson, Ben Okri, Richard Grant...just go and buy it.
PS - You design nerds might be interested to know that Vince Frost of emeryfrost is Creative Director - this man can make the alphabet look alarmingly sexy.
