We're not quite sure how Penguin arrived at this genius marketing ploy, but we can speculate that it was one of the following incidents:

1) The copyright on stock images of neo-classical and renaissance paintings expired.
2) The marketing honchos at Penguin were so obsessed with their Adicolor sneakers that this was the next logical step.
3) It was an existential aftershock following the release of Penguin by Design: a Cover Story
4) What's black and white and _____ all over?

In the world of book design, cover art is a relatively recent phenomenon. Sure, it's been common practice since the late '70s, but there's still time for you to nudge your way into the industry. Why not do as Beck did and start on one of your favourites? The My Penguin series contains such life-changing works as Steppenwolf, Dorian Gray and The Waves. Alternatively, you could use the blank cover to write a shopping list or nasty note to your dirty-dish defying housemate, or as a coaster. View other people's efforts here.
