Sometimes Melbourne wants to be New York so badly it's embarrassing. The worst part is the way every vaguely ‘serious' periodical wants to be The New Yorker. Someone needs to tell these publishers that talented Melbourne writers and illustrators don't need to be literary festival suck jobs and/or sad old baby boomers.
Thank god for the freshly redesigned and rejigged Meanjin, once a Melbourne Uni literary quarterly in danger of disappearing up its own arse. Now edited by angel-faced publisher-turned-novelist Sophie Cunningham, it's ditched the dry academic stuff for smart and lively writing, news bites and interviews. You can read about the naffness of calling things "world class", getting buzzed at Rue Bebs before smashing the system, the discontents of buying a leather jacket and how to prevent editors from hating you. There's plenty more where that came from, too.
Plus, it's a gorgeous object to be seen reading in a café or on public transport. There's a lovely '60s feel to the typography and to Lachlan Conn's illustrations; Paul Davis and Mandy Ord are among the other illustrators gracing the pages. Go on, use your brain, impress your friends, admit you live in Melbourne, etc.
