Sterling vocabulary and deft handling of simile aside, essayist David Rakoff is all about one thing. And it's not himself. Though the he depicts his writings as the works of King Narcissus, they are anything but that as the former Canadian has put himself through a cleansing fast, consultations with plastic surgeons, a Log Cabin Republican rally and summertime employment as a cabana boy all for our enjoyment. And to sate our inquiring-yet-cowardly minds.
Rakoff is the intrepid writer that isn't afraid of the blanks in your "I would really love to know what it's like to ______. Too bad I don't like ______." thoughts. There is more than humour here, there's politics; enough to earn Don't Get Too Comfortable back-cover billing as a Social Satire. How refreshing! (Why are we so thin on the ground with such works in Australia?) Of course, like the iPhone before it, the book is three years late reaching our shores. Granted, it's a timely publication: next month Rakoff will join good friend David Sedaris at the MIWF. Do your research here.
