It's fair to say that my mother has always had her doubts, and Animal Shelter is not the sort of magazine I want to leave lying around for her to find. Nor, I am somewhat ashamed to say, is it the kind of publication that makes me feel comfortable on the Cranbourne line (or beyond any city loop station for that matter) as it has the uncanniest knack of opening to the ‘inappropriate' page.

These minor details aside, Animal Shelter is, without a doubt, one of the most engaging publications I've come across in a long time. Looking back to the underground press sex culture of the 1970s, the publication is dedicated to real freedom for the present. Part intellectual journal, part DIY zine, it features essays, art, prose and poetry and, in a rare achievement, matches its passion with its precision and its approach with its reproaches.
