Like you, I also danced with joy down Swanston Street when we got UNESCO City of Literature status. (I was the one with the cape made from copies of The Monthly.) I danced because I LOVE literature, but I partied because I love SELF-PUBLISHING! Everyone I know in Melbourne self-publishes! Really. EVEN ME! As a city we now have a good shot at UNESCO City of People Who Are Not Afraid To Piss Big Money Up a Wall to Make a Book, in the Vain Hope The New Yorker Will Finally Recognise Our Talent and Employ Us Forever status.

SO, you can imagine my unbridled euphoria to read that the And Collective have self-published their fourth (and I think best) book. A Place Tells A Story is Marc Martin, Justine Ellis and Dan Rule's baby that pays homage to things local, and features work by writers, poets, artists, photographers and musicians (there's a CD). It's Melbourne self-publishing incarnate: quirky, substantial and designed within an inch of its life.

Philistines will choke on the $49 price tag, but the rest of us know this stuff underpins our wicked UNESCO status, and gives us cause to moonwalk down Swanston Street, in paper capes.
