It’s a secret
It may sound like a painful disease rampant in the 19th century, but don’t be put off by visions of bulbous sores just yet. Sitting atop the Rochester Castle Hotel, this little gem is hidden from prying eyes. We rang the doorbell, expecting to be greeted by a hunchbacked servant but were relieved when it turned out to be a tall friendly human.
He led us down a corridor to a bookshelf, apparently to read us a story, but in true Cluedo style the bookcase swung open and revealed the small but exquisite bar within. The carpets are plush and the pool table grand. You’ll want to pull out a cigar and recline in a chesterfield to talk about Hemingway and the rise of inflation. Then as soon as you start boring yourself you can head for the bar. The staff are friendly and the selection of alcohol is standard. If anything, Shingles is the closest thing to a private club you’ll find. But don’t tell too many of your friends, we want to keep this one the secret it deserves to be.
