Adult Swim has been running with the cartoons-for-grownups idea for years now. Personal favourites include Harvey Birdman: Attorney At Law, a show which took beloved Gen X childhood memories – Scooby Doo, Speed Buggy, Super Friends, and more – and recast them in a surreal courtroom drama.

And The Venture Brothers, a mash-up of the Hardy Boys, spy movies, and 1980s superhero cartoons, reached red on the genius scale when David Bowie appeared, shouted “Make way for the homo superior!” as he attacked his enemies, and transformed into an eagle.

Their latest is the tongue-twisting Metalocalypse. It has a much tighter pop-culture focus: metal. Band “Dethklok” are the most powerful cultural force imaginable, with album sales that influence both worldwide financial markets and teen suicide rates. Their music is “blacker than the blackest black times infinity,” according to the lead singer, Nathan Explosion.

Men crying tears of blood. Fans are crushed under stadium equipment. A birthday present for a nihilist. Accidentally raising an ancient Finnish troll. The first season DVDs are as good an inoculation against Christmas psychosis as you're going to get.
