Ever returned home too soon from a trip to Europe and found yourself unable to adjust? Walking around in a beret and stripy t-shirt, staring at the Arts Centre spire, squinting your eyes, trying to convince yourself it's the Eiffel Tower?
Fortunately, relief is now at hand. Delicious relief. The people at Waffle On have started making baguettes, which they bake themselves. If you are lucky, yours will still be warm when you take your first crunchy bite.
There are five to choose from, all the names are in French, everyone who works there speaks French, and they speak French at you, sometimes it seems like all the customers are speaking French too. They don't mind if you mispronounce the name of the baguette you want - they appreciate you making the effort.
Highlights include 'Le Fermier', with roast chicken, lettuce, tomato and an extremely generous amount of mayonnaise; it is sublime. 'Le Normand' has ham, lettuce, tomato and a choice of brie or Emmental Swiss cheese. (Obviously you will choose to have the brie, as most of us simply don't get enough brie in our diets.)
If you are fussy or adventurous you can come up with your own combination. This amazing experience will set you back a measly $7 and, yes, the baguettes are big. The line gets pretty long during lunch, but you can always snack on a waffle to keep your energy up.
