Del Kathryn Barton grew up on an alpaca farm outside of Sydney. This may help us to understand the perplexing beauty of her works. The artist describes her work as responding to the human impulse of imagining the characters that lie beneath the exterior of the face. Think of the charm and serenity of a llama, but don't forget their tendency to spit in your face.

In girl as own, the puddle-sized, deer-like eyes (which could have drowned Bambi's mother) are dizzying and saddened, swimming amongst the wash of watercolour cheeks. Part frightened animal, part femme fatal, with pouting lips and lacquered nails these fairytale faces strike out like a big bad wolf dressed in drag.
