To fish on our beautiful bay in winter, you need sea legs, cast iron guts, and a stiff, nautical beard (that covers your entire body). Thankfully though, spring has arrived so all you need now is a couple of mates, a box of barbecue shapes and a healthy sense of man-whimsy. Oh, and a vessel of some kind.

Located in Mordialloc, 45 minutes from the CBD, Allnut Boat Hire leases fish wagons to even the most land-lubbering hipsters. Prices start at $30 per hour with a two hour minimum. The sixth and tenth hours are free, but for most, two hours slipping around in fish blood (or wishing you were) will suffice.

Each yellow boat carries four, though you'll be happier in parties of three. Onboard are life jackets, fish charts, and a big box to keep your quarry in. For the occasional angler, Allnut can set you up with gear and bait, as well as daily or yearly fishing licenses ($6 or $24.50). So, if you're looking for something to do this weekend, get up early for once and discover the parallel joys of hauling free food out of nature's futile grasp. Or simply pretending you have.
