Wanda Gillespie's show explores 'the universal wish for flight and wanting the impossible'. We want to fly only because we can't, and this notion is expressed through installations of toy Barbie aeroplanes, with helium balloons bobbing gently above, and the fans of disembodied vacuum cleaners whirring among medium format square photographs. The objects, despite being enshrined in their struggle, are captured enigmatically within the gallery space.
The overarching theme of Gillespie's show is one of failure, but a charming failure rather than one of dismay. With an enchanting sound-scape of the artist's father whistling songs about flight, such as 99 Red Balloons, these clunky objects clearly will never make it off the ground. Gillespie suggests that our fascination lies in the knowledge that true flight will never be more than an attempt, and perhaps we are, in part, reassured knowing that it will never work.
