Sir Lord Warren Taylor. His Holiness Sri Guru Warren Taylor. How about the Honourable Duke Admiral Overlord Warren Taylor? What kind of honorific might properly recognise the contribution The Narrows, under Taylor's guidance, has made to Melbourne's exhibition history over the last few years?
"This will be the first survey of -----------'s work held in Australia" So many of the brilliant shows held since The Narrows opened in 2006 have borne this tag. Focusing on the intersection between art and design, Taylor (occasionally working with others) has brought international stars and overlooked mavericks to the people of Melbourne. Folkways designer Ronald Clyne, typographic designers Experimental Jetset, the Netherlands‚ Roma Publications, New York type-documentarian Tobias Frere-Jones, the utterly unique Ed Fella, and, most recently, the Tropicalia-related design work of Brazilian artist Rogerio Duarte.
More than an honorary title, what Taylor deserves is a massive budget and a team of interns - the work he does is simultaneously more cutting-edge and more important than most of what the big public galleries manage to achieve. As well as the international superstars there's also plenty of great local work. Then there's the publishing projects, the mini-bookstore and the free beer and posters. All hail the King.

ThreeThousand is a subcultural guide to Melbourne, published daily and fired by email weekly. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of Melbourne writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence ThreeThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
