There is a difference between entertainment and appreciation. Entertainment is a way to pass time, something passive, a way to boost morale, a bag of popcorn and a video, often easily forgettable. Appreciation on the other hand is active, involves learning and introspection, and often will stay with you forever. The Dutch Masters, the follow up to The Impressionists, and the second in the NGV's winter masterpiece series is all about appreciation. Available only due to renovations taking place in the Rijksmuseum this exhibition showcases the work of Johannes Vermeer, Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Pieter de Hooch and Jan Steen. Vivid self-portraits, sea-scapes, city scapes, stills and genre works give an insight into a golden age in European art. With The Dutch Masters the beauty is in the detail and the legacy is in the education.
