Art and crime make an odd couple. Like most celebrity flings, any attempt at marriage usually ends in divorce; think good-guy/criminal Mark "Chopper" Reid's encounter with a paintbrush.
Known for finding humour amidst the banality of the everyday, Anthony Lister's latest exhibition Smells Like White-Out locates the ideal synthesis of art and crime in the tattooed flesh of his jailbird subjects. In these paintings, the body of the subject is literally 'white[d]-out', leaving a minimal surface upon which Lister inscribes his comic text and spontaneous drawings in the form of tattoos. Flaunted, faded, or hidden from sight, the blue ink inscriptions project the faith of their fugitive bearer. Whether Jesus, or Céline Dion in concert, the selection is both comical and revealing.
