The genesis for some of the work in Ry Hasking's new show was a conversation about postmodernism with his father during half-time break at the footy. Now, I've been to the footy and seen all the fathers and sons getting about, doing their bonding thing. It's a wonderful thing to witness, but I wonder how many of them are discussing Nietzsche. In these enlightened times, probably more than you'd think!
Anyway, this story illustrates how Hasking's colour pencil drawings of movie posters, tubas, self-help gurus and tombstones deal with direct ideas that come from all kinds of different angles. When they are grouped together, they form a whole new set of meanings through the way they intersect and compliment each other.
Reinforcing this approach, his ultra-realistic drawings are hung in pyramid shaped frames, within an abstract wall painting, based on the concept of the magic square. So, in a way, if you were to tinker away on a Sodoku while viewing the show, you would be getting into the spirit of things. Sort of. Regardless, I think we're all agreed on one thing. Going to the footy with your dad is always a good idea.
