In a galaxy where everything can be compared to Star Wars it's too easy to equate the biennial Melbourne Art Fair with the Death Star. A planet-destroying machine whose roughly $20,000 fee to hire a stall is (set down next to most of the galleries you and I visit to see art) like parking an Imperial star destroyer beside Luke's landspeeder. It's a soothing metaphor - ARIs as the Rebel Alliance, guerrilla tactics such as Uplands' 2002 limousine service running from outside the fair to their (then) Chinatown digs - or Ashley Crawford et al's NOTFAIR this year - as brave X-wing pilots flying last-hope missions against a fully operational WMD of the art world empire.

Only, as metaphors go, it doesn't fly. Exhibit A: the Vernissage. If the Art Fair is the Death Star then how come you've been spending so much time plotting how you'll sneak in to the biggest art party of the year? Exhibit B: the ten Project Rooms. Good guys Hell Gallery and TCB art inc. join eight other non-profit spaces in the Emperor's chambers. Exhibit C: the (mostly free) auxiliary events. Lectures, forums and a rock'n'roll night at Ding Dong curated by Hell and featuring Darren Sylvester and Enter the Void (they're fronted by artist Ronnie van Hout - he's from New Zealand, which is a bit like Tatooine with hobbits).
