Super heroes are a dark, twisted lot. The blessing of their powers is also a curse, forever alienating them from the rest of Earth and opening up a world of moral ambiguity unknown to us mere mortals. I never would have thought as much when I was six, playing Superman for hours on end, lost in the dizzy fantasy of being able to fly, do whatever I want and return home to an ice palace.

‘Just souping around' was my adorable reply when asked what I was up to. A more accurate description would have been ‘I'm running around the house talking to myself, dressed in speedos, a cape and a tool belt'. While I cannot vouch for the exact childhood experience of Melbourne painter Meggs, it seems the super hero iconography has stuck with him, becoming a consistent metaphor for identity in his work.

Following on from his 2007 Alter Egoism show at Utopian Slumps, ...OWN WORST ENEMY juxtaposes pop-culture imagery and abstraction to create a collage of childhood heroes and alter egos, exploring themes of heroism, machismo, power and vulnerability. With earlier Meggs pieces now selling at auction houses in Paris and being acquired by the NGV, collectors will be getting in quick to view this new collection.

My advice is to soup up there on opening night and have a look for yourself.
