The Melbourne International Arts Festival has pulled a big name for its visual arts program in the 2004 Turner Prize winner, Martin Creed. Thousands of dollars have been spent flying Creed, his band and team of assistants over here to prepare and 'install' the exhibition. The end result- a gallery with the lights turned off.
Go on, make jokes, scoff, guffaw and smirk at the ridiculous nature of contemporary art. But before you do, take the time to visit the magical building that is ACCA, and experience what its like to have every preconceived idea about an exhibition subverted. The subversion is beautiful, meditative, consuming, deceptive, surprisingly varied and dynamic, and wholly dependent on audience participation. Then, you can scoff and guffaw.
