Emerging from a period of austerity, 1960s Britain was stirred by a newfound optimism and prosperity in the form of artistic innovation and social liberation.
British art gained significant momentum during this change, reflecting, participating and influencing what would become mythologised as the 'swinging sixties'.

Austin Powers and other clichés aside, when the idealistic realities of the sixties were recognised, and the establishment reacted to what was seen as a decline in social and moral standards, Britain 's people were affected again and an era of optimism soon became one of disillusionment.

NGV International presents British Art & the Sixties, a collection of works from the Tate Britain that explore the aesthetics and ideals of a post-war era that signified radical change for modern British culture.

Departures in form and content in British art are the essence of the exhibition; an exploration of colour and frivolity, stardom and sexuality, shadowed by the 'swinging sixties' mythology and its influence on pop-culture and consumer society. This exhibition is a must see.
