Keyword results: Un Magazine
Description:
Aside from that incredibly bad ad campaign that made you want to stick pins into your eyes and smash your television screen in with your face, un is also a really great free independent art publication, published bi-annually in Melbourne. un 3.2 is edited by Phip Murray and sub edited by Jared Davis with all the usual un-crap in it.
Event: magazine launch
Stimulus: local publishing
One time I tried writing about art and let me tell you it was no 50 cent bag of lollies. It was hard. Some people make it look easy, but reading their articles is sort of like watching Tom Pietrowski's finance report. You desperately want to share in the excitement, but you have no idea what he's lisping about.
Un Magazine is exactly the kind of thing you should be reading on the train. Think of all the intelligent art chats you could have with your boyfriend or girlfriend over dinner instead of just sitting there moaning about the guy at work who ate your yoghurt three days in a row (he leaves the lactose-streaked teaspoon sitting right on his desk in plain sight).
It seems it's a real challenge to write about art without getting high on your own cultural superiority. But the writers of un Magazine have always avoided this, with smart but accessible commentary on Melbourne's art scene. It doesn't matter if your artistic education hasn't progressed much since Art Attack, because un has turned art writing on its head.
