Being halfway through the 1872 aquatic sci-fi epic Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne, this Hello Sailor function looked to be right up my alley. I was hoping they'd supply all manner of futuristic naval paraphernalia, such as breathable fabrics made entirely from sea-going mammals, and seaweed cigars rivalling the finest Cubans.

Sure, the Midsumma festival gets rid of everyone who comes to Melbourne in Grand Prix season to straighten out their gay son, but it has much more to offer than that. For instance, Jason Lingard is curating a mega group show of installation and photography, opening at the Carlton Hotel on Tuesday.

In a recent poll, nine out of ten men surveyed said they'd much prefer to dip their nuts in napalm than accompany their girlfriends to a vintage fair. And who could blame them? Vintage fairs traditionally cater to women, and women only... that is, until now. A show by Melbourne artists who, at some point, have all found themselves isolated in hotel rooms. So who are they? Witnesses against the mob? Ivana trump's spare hair? No! They're a merry band of Serps and friends, including the magical Martin Bell, in a multi-room show curated by Johann Rashid.
This, of course, is not the Waverley Inn.

Using the interactive power of 'the web', we overlayed the stock list from this month's Hello Sailor Vintage Fair with Refinery29's NY Fashion Week newsfeed and came up with one million matches. A compelling result, we think you'll agree. Blazers, leather skirts, tan belts, check shirts, leather jackets, mens brogues, the exact outfit Chloe Sevigny wore to the Marc Jacobs afterparty, the materials required to make a Tavi-the-new-girl-in-town Baggu holder and old guitar strap hat.

Aside from their obvious ‘we come from a sweet era which you can never personally revisit' charm, vintage goods are also brilliantly seasonless. It doesn't really matter that it's as chilly as Anna Wintour's stare outside - if Hello Sailor Vintage Fair beckons, we go, because there is ALWAYS stuff to fawn over ('who cares if it's a light shift dress - it's vintage.
