The history of punk and DIY music is super inspiring, and songwriting is fucking tough.
These are just two reasons why Chris Knox is revered not only in his native New Zealand, but worldwide. In 1979 he formed Tall Dwarfs with Alec Bathgate, helping to pioneer a lo-fi, DIY aesthetic that combined punk's simplicity and disdain for musical virtuosity with home-recording experiments, cryptic lyrics, introspection, and the ultimate rebellion in counter-culture circles - admitting to love pop songs and hooks.
Sir Clement Freud went to New Zealand in 1978. When I asked the old sauce what he thought, he replied, "I find it hard to say, because when I was there it seemed to be shut."
I went to Joint Hassles this year and when my editor asked me for my art review, I replied, "I will find it hard to write that Michelle, because when I was there it seemed to have closed due to Northcote rent hikes.
Pie Paper is excellent for a number of reasons:
1. It is put together with the humble objective of keeping its creators mentally and creatively fit. They're interested in brains and how to better use them.
2. Each issue has a different theme, with the hope being that limiting possibilities will activate creativity.
It's something of a great Australian tradition to claim New Zealand's best as our own. OUR Crowded House, OUR Murray, OUR Russell Crowe (maybe they can keep that one). Sure they only get four TV channels and watch VHS but New Zealand has Hobbits! And '100% Pure'! We, on the other hand, have Nicolas Cage and 'Where the bloody hell are you'.
To be honest New Zealanders really raz me up. I mean, sure Karen Walker is great, and Pavement Magazine had its day in the sun until the 11-year-old cover girl incident. Then there's the uniquely Kiwi fear that only a Maori man like Jake the Muss can engender. Jesus I nearly cooked the man some eggs myself and I was only watching the film.
