If you go out to a band today, you're sure for a big surprise, as the ubiquity of animal band names is getting downright ri-donkey-luss. Formed in 2000, Department of Eagles certainly aren't the latest, but they are remarkably remarkable.
Singer Daniel Rossen is more widely known for his other animal band, Grizzly Bear, who developed a cult following after the 2006 strikingly original, avant-folk stunner Yellow House.
In addition to sharing the name of one of Melbourne's finest bygone groups, Brooklyn's Vivian Girls sound Australian in other Chapter Music / best indie senses. The trio's head-first, shambling delivery couches a classic handling of melody reminiscent of QLD greats Small World Experience, and there's a joy of fuzz and bubblegum sentiment reminiscent of Adelaide's Hit the Jackpot and Lindsey Low Hand.
Strut Records is a UK-based boutique label that stumbled a bit and is coming back strong. After releasing the first two discs in the 'Disco Not Disco' series, the level of unreleased, old, significant music that they were able to put together for compilations went downhill, fast. No matter how slighted 'Spasticus Autisticus' was when it was released, it doesn't need to show up on more than one of your compilations.

It's official - white is the new black.
After Black Mountain, Black Angels, Black Dice, Black Keys, and Blackety Blackety Black Black (they're HUGE in Oslo), now we're into whites: White Williams, White Rainbow, White Stripes, Barry White, and your new favourite band - White Rabbits.
Coming atcha from NYC via Columbia Missouri (which they deserted a short two years ago), White Rabbits wield catchy, urgent indie pop ala The Walkmen or French Kicks, but mix in some second-wave ska and tango tinges.
