Three hours north of Melbourne, on the banks of the Mighty Murray, lies the sleepy town of Echuca. I grew up in Echuca, and my childhood was one long, sun-drenched afternoon. We swam in the river and rode our bikes, smoked purloined cigarettes under hedges. We caught fish, stabbed fish, left fish to die, and marveled at the local autistic kid who could remember everything that had ever happened.
