OUR FAMILY: TWOTHOUSAND [SYDNEY] THREETHOUSAND [MELBOURNE] FOURTHOUSAND [BRISBANE] FIVETHOUSAND [ADELAIDE] SIXTHOUSAND [PERTH]

Thursday 11th June

We were going to send this earlier, but we were warming up for ghetto ice skating, then we had to buy beer for the Lenko shop launch, then we saw this new cafe and we wanted to file a report before everyone in Collingwood starts hogging the table soccer machine. Then we found this site called Twitter. BAM! Tell your friends man, people should be using this thing!

The cover of PCA issue 2 is eye-catching to say the least. Some may be turned off by it and some may be turned on, though both reactions would be way off the mark. The image, part of the series 14 Months by Glasgow based artist Paul Knight, encapsulates the magazine's statement of intent perfectly. That is, a behind the scenes look into the process of creating, in all its forms.

Seeing an image like that out of context, it's difficult to gauge its intended meaning. Of course, subjectivity is a part of what makes art interesting, but to read what Knight has to say about the (highly considered) process of creating these photos not only changes the way the image works, it makes you think about all the other stories you're only getting half of.

The ground covered is considerable, including a conversation between fashion designers Fiona Lau and Helene Balle and a warm tribute to the inner workings and failings of the now defunct Flesh Vs. Venom by bassist Tim Hillier. Each article has a life of its own, celebrating the very creative process it sets out to document.

Kitsune Maison 7 is a 19-track aural orgy - there's pleasure, a few gags, but plenty to get jiggy with. Like the six instalments before it, this compilation has several stand-out pieces, namely ‘Make it reverse' (Men) and the sultry vocals of ‘Favourite Things' (The Golden Filter). ‘This sweet love' (James Yuill) is great too but clearly the odd one out in the orgy - the one regretting throwing the keys to his Nissan Micra in the ceramic bowl.

Utterly disappointing is the Classixx's remix of ‘Listzomania' (Phoenix), which transforms the indie magnum opus into a filtered disco disaster. Gag. However, my biggest gripe is the 22-second silent track titled ‘Encore'... Really? I mean, really?! To the people at Kitsune, take note: no one likes a narcissistic anything... even an exceptionally handsome journalist isn't loved by all his readers.

Overall the album is fun, and while you wouldn't want to listen to it from start to finish everyday, it is the perfect mode for discovering something you never knew you were into, all in the comfort of your own home.

Sunshine Cleaning made its debut at last year's Sundance Film Festival, and the trailer makes it look very ‘Sundance', know wam sayin? Uplifting indie soundtrack; cutesy bickering and wisecracking between family members; poignant moments of revelation.

Luckily, I hadn't seen the trailer before I saw the movie, or I would've waddled into the cinema under the weight of my own cynicism. As it turns out, Sunshine Cleaning is refreshingly unsentimental about family and everyday dignity. Amy Adams is perfect as protagonist Rose Lorkowski - her sunniness resists irony yet doesn't cloy either. As her no-good sister Norah, Emily Blunt provides snark sweetened with compassion.

Once a high school queen bee, Rose is now a single mum working as a house cleaner. She's having an affair with a married cop (Steve Zahn), who words her up on the lucrative crime-scene cleanup business. Enlisting a reluctant Norah, Rose learns the job by trial and error, with the occasional help of enigmatic, one-armed cleaning supplies seller Winston (Clifton Collins Jr). Gradually, the sisters learn to tidy their own traumatic past. As Rose says, "We took all that stuff away, and we made it better."

While the shop has been open for four years, the Melbourne Central Lenko boutique has always seemed a little out of place. Its location in a giant shopping centre never quite fit the attitude of the treasures inside and climbing the escalators to buy a new sweatshirt never felt more like a trip to year 9 than during school holidays. As if to appease the bitter, cranky, and adolescent-phobia afflicted, Dana from Lenko has opened a new shop in the city.

Dana and company have completely overhauled the space in Cathedral Arcade where Genki used to reside, with new paint, new designs, and new floors. The walls have three murals already in place, and Dana insists that there are more to come as well as a monthly art installation window out front with Raff Banks taking charge first. Without missing a beat, the new shop is still stocking designs from Australia and elsewhere including Limedrop, Chip Chop, I Heard They Eat Cigarettes, Formally Known As, and Tai Snaith. Maximum shopping potential with minimal acne and braces.

So you've had your eye on a Karen Walker dress, but you thought you could wait. Then you missed it. Then again at the sale. It happens. But now there's an answer. Tessuti Fabrics has a range of short-run and remnant fabrics from some of the best local and international designers, so now you can make your own.

If that's a concern, the beautifully presented Japanese Pattern Books for sale will keep you on the right path. With some of the best designs seen in pattern books for years, these alone are worth a trip. Thing is, you'll stay for the amazing range of ridiculously high quality materials from Chanel, Armani, Josh Goot and Collette Dinnigan.

They're an experienced bunch too. Having already established themselves all over Sydney, the Tessuti Fabrics crew couldn't have found themselves a more appropriate site (very conveniently located above the new Coda restaurant and below The Narrows Gallery) on Flinders Lane. Look for the giant Button and Needle above the doorway in the old rag-trading district.

Drew Pettifer will soon be famous for photographing his friends. In an Andy Warhol sort of way though, not in a McGinley way. I'm not saying you want to see Drew's friends naked any more than you want to see McGinley's friends naked, or even Warhol's friends naked - especially these days, ewww.

Oh, I don't know what I'm saying. It's just that I like the sort of short-circuit thing that happens in Drew's pictures. They objectify everyone, just like regular photos, but the subjects seem to be objectifying Drew right back. Or hating him. In fact, if it wasn't pictures of men, you'd say this was post feminism in action.

Drew would like to point out that there are 71 works in the whole show, ranging from Polaroid size up to 60 x 40 inch. And there will be plenty of beer tonight. I would like to point out that this is one of those times when getting naked at the after party could really pay off in the long term.

Ice skating rinks have strong romantic undertones. We're not sure exactly why that is, but there's something about them that screams 'first kiss'. Or, failing that, ‘awkward text message the following day'. "Wow, that didn't go as planned." "Guess I read that all kinds of wrong." "I was drunk."

The point is, ice skating is great date material. It's kinda cutesy, kinda sweet, and a good excuse to hold hands if someone falls over. That's the theory anyway. Unfortunately, Melbourne's chronic lack of ice skating facilities has meant this goldmine of potential dating success has gone untapped for years. Until now.

Wonderland's ice skating rink may be a little ghetto, but it is centrally located, close to pubs and features a soundtrack of cheesy pop music. It will also show your date you have a heightened sense of irony - which is important when dating white people. Whether ice skating can improve your chances of 'sexy fun times' remains to be seen, but we feel it's our duty to find out. If you're sick of paying for hookers, we suggest you do the same.

Felix is someone you'd recognise from around about. But now he has his own cafe, so you'll be able to say 'Hey, it's Felix, from that place on Greeves Street!'

His new cafe/bar, Felice's, is awesome in a Handsome Steve's House of Refreshment kind of way. It has a pared-back Italian coffee house thing going on (smoky mirrors, cute red sugar bowls, wood panelling, handmade pastries). It's not whimsical at all, in fact it's a whimsy-less oasis, but it makes you feel like you're in an Italian version of Amelie, if they had a scene with Collingwood hipsters.

There's table football, they have rolls for lunch and they've kept the giant model aeroplane that used to hang from the roof when it was 20th Century Pieces. Go to Felice's if you want to get an espresso, an espresso with grappa, an espresso with Sambuca, a nice midday glass of red, a nice midday bottle of Coopers Red, and absolutely no bullshit.

Admit it, you painted a melting clock in year 8 art and pretended it was your idea. Well, it's taken a while but you're going to get sprung this weekend bucko. Everyone's going to find out it was really Salvador Dali's idea! The giant Dali retrospective, Liquid Desire, opens at NGV International on Saturday and there will be more than 200 of his works on show. Apart from designing the Chupa Chups logo, Dali was a giant of the Surrealist movement and a twenty-four hour party guy. He would say things like 'I am the drug' - and he wasn't even on drugs!

We think the best time to go will be on Wednesdays at Art After Dark. You can get a ticket right up until 7.30, then stay until 9pm. Choose your night wisely though, because there's a musical element to the After Dark program and one of them is salsa classes. But don't worry, there's also a New York party, interesting talks, and a Parisian Bohemia twisty moustache night! Thanks to NGV, we have 5 double passes to Liquid Desire to give away. To enter, just answer the following question.

This week's question:
Okay, I did not

a) invent the melting clock idea
b) come here for salsa
c) expect a 500 word image credit
d) pass year 8 art

Send your answer, name and mailing address to win@threethousand.com.au. Winners will be notified by email. subscriber only entry! Not a subscriber? Oh noooes! Sign up here.
