Electronic music can get predictable. To hold an audience’s attention, it helps if you douse yourself in fake blood and put on a theatrical live show with dancers dressed like Leigh Bowery, or write interesting, inventive songs.

Sydney duo Theatre of Disco does both. Their sound combines electro with glitchy samples and over-the-top humour (at times they veer into all-out indie territory, like on the fantastic ‘Oke’).

Film and TV composer Oli Chang and theatre director / parole officer James Brennan formed their band in Berlin after meeting at a squat party in London. They’ve now brought the party down under. As a reviewer, it’s great when you come across a terrific CD by a new band you’ve never heard of. This is one of those.

Launch:
The Melbourrne launch is this Saturday, Jan 12 at Roxanne. Doors open at 9pm. It costs $10 before midnight and $12 after. They're supported by Neon Knights and there will be a $4 spiked punch among other very cheap beverages.
