Maybe the shipment of Elefant's debut album Sunlight Makes Me Paranoid came to Australia via the Bermuda Triangle? Or perhaps the plane crashed over the Himalayas where the pilot survives with only a chocolate bar and 10,000 CD's for nourishment? It may be a stretch but there must be some good reason why this brilliant album never graced our shores. Formed in NYC in 2001, Elefant, share the same Eau de Brit-Pop sensibilities as The Dears and The Killers. Sunlight Makes me Paranoid gives a wink to the likes of New Order, The Smiths, Iggy Pop and Pulp. Like Interpol, Elefant's songs reveal the beautiful underbelly of romance, the rich bass-lines and enigmatic vocals feel like a slap in the face healed by a kiss. With an engaging album as carefully curated as their outfits, Elefant's dandy-meets-mod aesthetic is art rock at it's best - pretentious but fun.
