This new record from one of New Zealand's most riotous acts has a definite whiff of maturation about it. Once upon a time, you see, these Dunedin boys (that's deep, deep south people - think Nom*D and Flying Nun Records) would fling brawling one and half-minute noise bombs in a relatively scattershot fashion.
While Promises Promises definitely revisits their brawling, abrasive sound - fear not fans! It's still the rawkish post hardcore that came from previous workings with the legendary Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies, Shellac) - this time they're also delivering a payload of melody and song structure that hitherto seemed a little M.I.A.
But don't let them fool you, they're not mellowing out with age. The guys are still full of vitriol, primal rhythms, shard-like guitar work and infectious clamour. Promises Promises should enhance the act's well-earned misfit-savant reputation and pick up some new fans along the way, too.
