We're talkin' grandiose auditory adventures on tiny spools of magnetic tape and a talented pool of acts such as Garbage and the Flowers, Naked on the Vague and Knitted Abyss. We're talkin' about Near Tapes!
A venture of Sydney artist and musician Matthew Hopkins, Near Tapes is an outlet for music that will make your hair stand on end. Featuring a range of stylings from dictaphone wizardry to wah-wah guitar noise to experimental pop, Matt adorns each cassette cover with hand-drawn designs based around tiny turtles, one-eyed monsters, and devilish, shrivelled heads.
One of Near Tapes more recent outings is a recording of a live performance by Holy Balm at Serial Space. What graces the ear is a smoking hot journey through noisy psychedelics, George Clintonesque bass wobble and a heavy dose of drum machine and percussion that would not sound out of place on Eno's Another Green World.
Lastly, dear reader, please keep your ears peeled for upcoming releases including a live set from Chrome Dome and a split 12" series featuring Wet Hair/Naked on the Vague and Freechoice/Superstar.
Viva la Cassette!

To Cure: A predictable playlist
