Regardless of the era, older brothers who smoke pot and play Dungeons and Dragons are perennially cool. Virginia's Pontiak capture that wizards and jean jacket vibe perfectly on Maker, their third full-length album.

Trudging through stacks of sludge and fuzz, this is slow-groove downer rock, like if Dead Meadow, Black Mountain, and Tame Impala made a really stoned baby with Black Sabbath. The fact that the bass-heavy pummeling rolling out of your speakers is made by three bearded brothers from a farm in rural Virginia seems somehow perfectly appropriate.

Maker's not all about heaviosity; they lighten the air regularly with melodic touches of new school Sub Pop-style classic rock (Moondoggies, Fleet Foxes). We have the wonderful people at Fuse Music to thank for this being available domestically, as they've recently secured a distro deal with trailblazing U.S. indie label Thrill Jockey (Double Dagger, Tortoise, Arbouretum) - thankfully we'll see more of their bands available locally.

Did I mention that Pontiak make great videos too?
