What ever happened to my rock and roll? Apart from an all-too-easy throwaway opening sentence, dissecting Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's third full length offering Howl is proving to be surprisingly difficult. The answer is that for BRMC rock has devolved back to its acoustic guitar and harmonica roots, a time when folk, blues and psychadelia were musical genres whose appreciation didn't require a visit to your local public library.
After being dropped by Virgin, BRMC have been able to make the country album they've been yearning to record but haven't had the freedom to release. Howl is a beautifully accomplished album that highlights the bands diverse song writing sensibilities. Reminiscent of Beck's Sea Change insomuch as this is a departure album that will both divide and test their fans as well as potentially reward them with an unexpected appreciation of the true rock and roll.
