Judging from its recent prodigious output, the borough of Brooklyn must not have much room for working-class immigrants and black hip-hop heads with its huge influx of folk-strumming, falsetto-loving, glitch-savvy, new age Gen Y beardos.
Here We Go Magic is Brooklyn denizen Luke Temple's new band. The self-titled debut is a stunner, inhabiting all the charm and beauty of that new, weird Brooklyn sound.
Luke's past work (released under his own name) was bleary-eyed orch. Indie, like Sufjan Stevens or Antony. With Here We Go Magic, his scope has widened, incorporating a more psychedelic sound, akin to Animal Collective, Yeasayer, or Grizzly Bear (with whom they'll be touring North America in May/June).
Here We Go Magic (the album) pulses with rhythms and loops, oozing texture and warmth. It's varied, with moments of undulating shoegaze sound ('Ghost List'), ambient stretches ('Nat's Alien'), even old-timey waltz ('Everything's Big') interspersed amongst the trance-inducing folktronica ('Tunnelvision').
Brooklyn. What will they think of next?
