The White Stripes pride themselves on being simple with Jack's no messin' around durgy, bluesy, swamp rock guitars against Meg's straight shootin' accented drum beats. Album #5, Get Behind Me Satan expresses either a desire, or need, to progress beyond this simplicity. Jack's ambitions and musical abilities have clearly prevailed over the restrictive stylistic framework established at the duo's outset, red and white costumes withstanding.

On first listen the album could seem a little confused but not in a pre-pubescent wet dream sort of way. Piano, multi-tracked guitars, vocals and developed percussion could be seen to contradict their original point of difference yet, at the same time suggests a maturity that can only be reached through experience. Get Behind Me Satan could prove to be The White Stripes greatest album to date and maintains the treasured spontaneity created by self-inflicted short recording sessions. The rough mix brings the individual parts into sharp relief, emphasising the alteration of instrumentation and expressing the raw dynamics of a truly innovative band. With Satan on their side at least not too many critics will be dancing on their grave.
