I like women. It's no secret to anyone who knows me; girls are right at the top of my list of interests. Just below that is under-appreciated music, so when Fly Girls! hit my desk, I almost went into a state of shock.
Female hip hop is now thirty years old. These woman have been struggling and subverting the overly male dominated world of hip hop for three decades. That takes some... well no, the point is it doesn't take any balls. Thankfully, for all of us who weren't following the struggle, Soul Jazz has compiled Fly Girls! B-Boys Beware: Revenge of the Super Female Rappers!
The record is a historical statement, including songs from the first solo female hip hop record, the Sugarhill Records and Sylvia Robinson era, and current scene leaders like Missy Elliott. These are the people who made the creative lives of Yo! Majesty and Macromantics possible. Gems like JJ Fad's battle rap towards Roxanne Shante and Camille Yarborough's hit (sampled for pop music's advantage) shine through, but the entire tracklist represents rock-solid trailblazing artists and never lets you question the selection.
Release: Compilation
To Cure: A predictable playlist
